A growing town with country around it
Gracemere sits just west of Rockhampton, its own town rather than a suburb, and it has grown quickly. Its history runs back to the Archer brothers’ pastoral property, established there in 1854, and the country around it is still grazing land. That mix shows up in the concrete work: new-estate driveways and patios in town, and big sheds, long drives and rural slabs on the blocks around it.
New estates
New homes in Gracemere’s estates usually start with a basic builder’s driveway. The common next jobs are widening it, adding a patio and side paths, and pouring a slab for a shed. Estate covenants sometimes control driveway finishes, so check before choosing a colour.
Sheds, drives and acreage
On bigger blocks, the shed slab is often the biggest pour. Caravan, boat and machinery sheds need thickened edges for the frame, steel sized to the load and bolts set out from the supplier’s drawings. A long driveway in from the road needs falls along its length and a base that stays firm through a wet summer.
On rural blocks, yard pads, trough pads and wash-down bays are rural concrete work: rough finishes for stock and falls for wash water.
Getting the truck there
On rural blocks the last stretch, from the gate to the slab, is usually the hard part. Soft ground after rain bogs trucks, so agree on the access route and be ready to move the pour date if the weather turns.

Asked in Gracemere
Do I need the shed kit before the slab is quoted?
You need the shed supplier's footing and slab drawing, even if the kit has not arrived. The slab, footings and bolt positions should be built to that plan, so it is the first thing a concreter will ask for.
What finish should a cattle yard floor have?
A rough, grooved or heavily broomed finish, so stock keep their footing when it is wet and dirty. Smooth or sealed concrete is slippery for animals. The slab should also fall to a drain so manure and wash water do not pool.
