The job goes from this line to a single QBCC-licensed concreter, who prices and pours it.
- Slab sized for what actually parks on it
- Falls away from the garage and the house
- Crossover sorted with council first
Built for the ute, not the brochure
A Rockhampton driveway usually carries more than a sedan. Dual-cab utes, trailers, a caravan backed in over the same corner every trip, the odd delivery truck. A driveway that only allows for a car will crack where the heavy wheels go. When you ask for a quote, say what parks on it, and look for the thickness and the steel to be written on the quote rather than just a price per square metre.
Water, every summer
When a storm comes through in summer, a lot of water lands at once. A driveway needs a deliberate fall, usually to the street or to a drain, and it has to finish below the garage slab or storm water ends up inside. On sloping blocks around The Range and Frenchville, the fall is easy to get but harder to control, so the bottom of the drive needs somewhere for the water to go.
The crossover
The section between your boundary and the kerb sits on council land. A new crossover generally needs council’s tick and has to match council’s standard drawing, so check with Rockhampton Regional Council before the boxing goes in. The concreter will usually know the local standard, but the approval is the owner’s responsibility.
Finishes
A plain broomed finish is the cheapest and the easiest to patch, and the broom marks give grip when it is wet. Exposed aggregate costs more but hides tyre marks, dust and red dirt far better, and it does not throw the glare a smooth pale slab does in full sun. Coloured concrete runs the colour right through the mix.
Old driveways
A cracked, sunken driveway usually means trouble underneath: a soft base, roots, or water getting in. Breaking it out and starting again often beats patching. A decent concreter will tell you which one your driveway needs.
Getting it quoted
Pace out the length and width, grab a photo from the kerb and another from the garage, and ring 0489 908 651. A licensed Rocky concreter gets it and rings you to book a measure-up.
Rockhampton and Gracemere
- Frenchville Established homes on the slopes towards Mount Archer, where runoff and old driveways are the usual jobs.
- Gracemere A fast-growing town west of Rockhampton, with new estates, big sheds and rural blocks on its edges.
- Norman Gardens A big northern suburb mixing newer estates with older homes, where upgrades and add-ons are the usual work.
- Parkhurst Rockhampton's northern edge, with newer homes and working sheds side by side.
- The Range Established homes on higher ground west of the centre, where old concrete and steep entries are the work.
Fair questions
Is it normal for new concrete to crack?
Some hairline cracking comes with shrinkage. Saw-cut control joints give it a straight, tidy place to happen. Wide cracks, lifting or sinking usually point to a problem with the base, the steel or the joints.
When can I drive on a new driveway?
Feet after about a day, cars after roughly a week and trucks or caravans later still, as a loose guide. Go by what your concreter says for your slab, since heat and the mix shift it.
