The job goes from this line to a single QBCC-licensed concreter, who prices and pours it.
- Colour all the way through
- A paver look with no gaps for weeds
- Sealed against fade
Two ways to colour concrete
Integral colour means the batching plant blends oxide pigment through every cubic metre, so a chip in the surface shows the same colour beneath. Surface colour, usually a colour hardener spread over the fresh slab, gives a stronger colour on the top layer only. Stencilled concrete often uses both.
Earthy reds, browns and sandstone tones suit Rockhampton’s light and dirt better than greys that show every bit of red dust.
How stencilling works
Peel the stencil off and the strips it was masking show through in the base colour, which reads as grout between pavers. The result looks like pavers but is one continuous slab, so there is nothing for weeds or ants to come up through.
Stencilling is not stamping. Stamped concrete presses texture into the surface with mats, while stencilled concrete stays relatively smooth.
The sun
Central Queensland sun is hard on colour and eats sealer, so budget to reseal now and then, more often on an open drive than under a patio roof. Find out which sealer is quoted and how shiny it dries, since a high-gloss coat on smooth concrete gets greasy-slick in the wet.
Where it suits
Front driveways, entries and patios where the look matters most. For the slab itself, see concrete driveways and paths and patios.

Rockhampton and Gracemere
- Frenchville Established homes on the slopes towards Mount Archer, where runoff and old driveways are the usual jobs.
- Gracemere A fast-growing town west of Rockhampton, with new estates, big sheds and rural blocks on its edges.
- Norman Gardens A big northern suburb mixing newer estates with older homes, where upgrades and add-ons are the usual work.
- Parkhurst Rockhampton's northern edge, with newer homes and working sheds side by side.
- The Range Established homes on higher ground west of the centre, where old concrete and steep entries are the work.
Fair questions
Will coloured concrete fade in the sun?
Colour mixed through the slab does not wear off, but strong sun softens every colour over time. Sealing slows fading and helps with stains. Resealing comes around every so often, sooner on an open drive than under a roof.
